SAMAA TV has an exclusive interview with a former chief justice.
Former Chief Justice of Pakistan (ex-CJP) Saqib Nisar has said that a 'fake' audio tape attributed to him was intended to persuade the judiciary to side with the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) leadership, which is facing legal action.
In an exclusive interview with SAMAA TV, he said that 'these
individuals' first publicised his false audio recording, and then convened a
news conference to save face.
The former Chief Justice of Pakistan was referring to Maryam
Nawaz's press conference on Wednesday.
"There isn't anything new here." Justice (retd)
Nisar informed SAMAA's Lahore Bureau Chief Naeem Hanif, "They have tried
the same techniques in the past."
He said that Pakistan's judiciary has always been
independent and free.
"The phoney recording is an attempt to put pressure on
the courts," he added.
"By employing such techniques, this party hopes to
obtain relief from the courts in the cases it is involved in," he
continued.
He said that his job didn't enable him to do what the tape
suggested.
"Let me be a little direct about it," the ex-CJP
purportedly says in the audio tape. "Unfortunately, we have institutions
who deliver judgements."
"We would have to penalise Nawaz Sharif in this case
[the trial of Nawaz Sharif and her daughter] because we have been promised that
Imran Khan will be coming to power."
However, according to a fact-check analysis by SAMAA TV, the audio recording in question appears to be a composite of two consecutive remarks by former CJP Nisar.
SAMAA TV's fact-checking efforts were praised by the
previous chief justice, who called the channel's work a "jihad."
