According to media reports, Pakistan has begun delivering free pharmaceuticals to Afghanistan in order to reinforce its assistance for the neighbouring nation, which is grappling with major medical and health issues.

The first consignment of pharmaceuticals worth Rs25 million was sent from Karachi for viral illness treatment, routine prescriptions for prevalent disorders among the elderly, and emergency supplies.

The WHO reported that a lack of financial assistance for Afghanistan's largest health initiative, Sehetmandi, has left thousands of institutions unable to acquire medical equipment or pay staff after meeting with senior Taliban officials, medical experts, and patients.

According to the WHO, only around one-fifth of the country's Sehetmandi facilities remained open, however access to all communities was "no longer restricted."

"We've provided wheelchairs and other critical medical equipment, in addition to pharmaceuticals," said Ghulam Hashim Noorani of the Pakistan Chemists and Druggists Association. "It's a start, and we're hoping that our industry will step up and fulfil our Afghan brothers and sisters' expectations." They are in severe need of our assistance."

Last month, Pakistani health officials declared that they will work with Afghanistan to improve the country's healthcare infrastructure, which has been severely harmed by the fighting. Dr. Faisal Sultan, the Prime Minister's Health Adviser, has encouraged the Afghan authorities to "identify their health needs" in order for Pakistan to help.

Pakistan has previously built a 300-bed tertiary-care hospital in Kabul, dubbed "Mohammad Ali Jinnah Hospital," which is now the sole operational public health facility with 50 oxygenated beds for Covid-19 patients.
